So I decided that I needed groceries in the middle of the night. I work a very interesting 2pm-10pm shift which completely throws off my sleep cycle and permits me to take inappropriate drives at ridiculous hours. As I turned the key and warmed up the engine of my tC, I realized that fuel was not an issue -- in fact, I had plenty of it! Hell, why not take a "Spirited Drive"?
My challenge? The BQE at 1 AM. To the city and back as fast as possible.
With little traffic and adequate speed to avoid harsh pavement, it's possible to navigate the high speed turns of most New York City highways without much trouble. The BQE is no exception. Making sure to stay as far from others as possible, I flew by each person I passed -- almost as if they were standing still.
As I continued along at a constant pace of 80-90, a car entered the highway at an entrance up ahead going quite fast. It was black, low to the ground and rather sporty looking. As it entered the turn, the chase began. I immediately shifted to low gear.
I went fast into the 1st corner, slowly sliding towards the outer lane as expected. I buried the throttle and attempted to get a bit closer to see what I was chasing.
2nd corner. I dove into this one hard. I began to understeer and then as I attempted to correct the error, the car started to oversteer. My prey on the other hand, glided through the turn with ease. I pulled out of the turn 10 mph slower than expected.
I decided to test the individuals bravery. Usually, there are not many cars willing to go as fast as I am. As we both accelerated, it was clear that he had at least double my power. We approached speeds of 125+ although I can only imagine how fast he was going.
Approaching the 3rd corner, I realized why this individual was out. They were just like me -- out for no other reason than to test the limits of a great machine.
I simply could not keep up with the car. Traffic was not a factor. As embarrassed as I am to admit it, I lost to a car and didn't even get close enough to see it clearly. I don't even know the manufacturer.
Well, I eventually made it to the grocery store. I picked up everything necessary and took it easy on the way back home.
Tonight was a good night.
